The mental health-related podcasts on this website were created for the Emory course HLTH385/ENG380: Podcasting on Health. The following podcasts are available:
- Mental Illness: Prevalence and Risk. This succinct video podcast reveals a surprising truth: One-half of Americans will struggle with mental illness during their lifetimes. My hope is that knowing how common mental illness is will decrease the stigma.
- Diverse Depression: Cross-Cultural Mental Illness. This two-minute interview podcast explores the differences in perception and treatment of depression in different cultures. A young woman from an Indonesian family recently diagnosed with depression and a sociology professor with a Sri Lankan background were interviewed for this podcast.
- Mental Health in the Age of Climate Change. This multihost podcast discusses how climate change leads to disaster – and disaster to depression. Resiliency training is being used to help survivors heal after natural disasters. This podcast was created in collaboration with classmate Deanna Altomara and features material from an interview with a dean at Emory’s nursing school.
- Creative Healing: Art Therapy at Emory. Emory students are using art to discuss mental illness and promote healing. I interviewed a sophomore involved with the student group Emory Dark Arts to find out more.
All individuals interviewed for podcasts have granted permission for me to publish them on this website. A complete bibliography of all sources used this semester is available HERE.
